National Guard troops armed with chainsaws and beef stew rations reached out to residents still without power Sunday after a deadly ice storm paralyzed areas from the Ozarks through Appalachia early last week.
Soldiers cut their way into some of the more remote communities Sunday, freeing residents who had not been able to get out of their driveways in nearly a week.
Thousands of people remained without heat and power Sunday. Louisville resident Ann Hager, 66, said her home was still pretty cold, but she plans to continue staying there rather than stay with friends or a public shelter.
“I guess I have a little of the pioneer spirit,” Hager said.
At its height, the storm knocked out power to 1.3 million customers from the Southern Plains to the East Coast. By Sunday, the figure had dropped closer to 400,000 in Kentucky, with scattered outages in other states.
